Imagine running an Internet cafe that relies on generators for power, has to have most of its supplies shipped from abroad and welcomes customers with armed security guards.

That's precisely how former Brighton resident Gay-LeClerc Qaderi and her Afghan husband, Sherdil, must run the Cabul Coffee House. The cafי, which opened in April 2006 in Kabul, is a culinary and cultural oasis for foreign nationals, journalists, contractors and other expats who desperately need a place to sip and nibble away the stresses of living and working in the war-weary Afghan capital.

 "We wanted to design something to make people say 'I'm not in Kabul anymore," says Qaderi, "We wanted a place where everyone (especially women) could come and feel comfortable and safe."
