China to Reopen Internet Café License Application
Thursday, 10 January 2008

The Chinese government is reopening the application for Internet café licenses across the country.

In addition, the new application process will be simpler and the government will implement more policies to support the growth of Internet cafes, especially those with chain operations.

Pearl Research believes the new policy will help further increase China’s Internet penetration, which now stands at 162 million users. This also would have a positive effect for game companies who rely on Internet cafes as marketing venue.

Sunday, 30 December 2007

The local internet group said the new cafe would provide training for adults and those with disabilities and would be an extension of schemes already running at the local authority-run Robertson Road resource centre.

Pakistan: Bomb attacks on Internet cafes forced their owners to switch to 'safer' businesses
Sunday, 30 December 2007

Islamabad : A string of deadly bomb attacks and warnings from pro-Taliban militants in northwestern Pakistan have forced many owners of internet cafes and shops selling music and movies to switch to 'safer' businesses.

In the past few months, such shops in Peshawar, the capital of the North West Frontier Province, and its surrounding areas have been the targets of bombings that have killed relatively few but spread panic among the people

The militants described CD shops and cyber cafes as "un-Islamic" and warned their owners to switch to other businesses.

When the owners did not shut shop after being warned by pro-Taliban militants earlier this year, their establishments were systematically targeted in bomb attacks. The explosions, which usually occurred a little before dawn, damaged shops and equipment.
