UK: An elderly people's home in York has opened an internet café
Thursday, 22 November 2007

An elderly people's home in York has opened an internet café to allow its residents to contact friends and family through the web.

The Fordlands Elderly Persons Home, in Fordlands Road, Fulford, opened its new internet lounge which has two compters with internet access, a webcam, sofas for the residents to relax on and a shop.

Jessie Clithero, of Fulford, who works at the home, said: "York Cares approached us and asked if we had something in mind that they could do as a project and I immediately suggested an internet café.

"The elderly often suffer from loneliness because they do not see their friends and family as often as they would like. There are residents here who have relatives abroad and with computers and a webcam they can communicate face-to-face with them. York Cares donated one of the computers and we raised money through fundraising to buy another computer and a webcam".

Wednesday, 07 November 2007

Knoxville, US

When  Ingrid Gee started her online lifestyle resource guide and accompanying daily talk show seven months ago, she had a simple goal - improve people's lives by connecting them with the right information and the right businesses.

Now, the 33-year-old petite blonde hopes to bring more people together as she prepares to open in January an Internet cafe on Market Square, where she will broadcast her radio show live with co-host Mark Atnip, the voice of the Knoxville Ice Bears hockey team.

The cafe will feature prepackaged gourmet food for take-home or dine-in. Ten booths equipped with computers will provide guests free Internet access, or patrons can bring in their own laptops to use free Wi-fi.

Gee and Atnip will broadcast their radio show from a 500-square-foot, floor-to-ceiling glass studio inside the cafe,"I want to combine the nostalgia of radio's past with modern-day technology," Gee said.
